The problem

South Africa is facing a foundation phase literacy crisis.

The 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study measured Grade 4 reading comprehension across 43 countries. South Africa ranked last. 81 percent of our Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning in any language, including their home language. In township and rural schools, that figure rises even higher.

60%+

youth unemployment traces back to this crisis

A Grade 4 learner sits at a wooden desk in a South African classroom, resting his chin on his hand as he concentrates on an open textbook

This is not marginal underperformance. A learner who cannot read by Grade 4 falls behind in every subject. Mathematics word problems, science instructions, and history texts become inaccessible. Retention drops. Dropout rates rise. By matric, cohorts that started school with equal potential have diverged completely. The country's youth unemployment crisis begins with a Grade 1 child who never learned to decode words.

This is a solvable problem. Every Child Reads Initiative NPC exists to solve it.

Our solution

A proven methodology, delivered by South African educators.

We do one thing well. We train foundation phase educators, in their own schools, to teach reading using a two-layer methodology developed over three decades of classroom experience. Every trained educator receives a full set of structured literacy materials, in their home language and in English, to use every day of the school year.

1 Layer one

Educator renewal and professional reconnection.

Before we introduce methodology, we restore educator confidence, purpose, and professional identity. Effective literacy instruction begins with a teacher who feels seen, valued, and ready. This is the step most teacher training programmes skip. It is why so many programmes fail.

2 Layer two

Practical classroom implementation.

Once educators are professionally renewed, we deliver hands-on workshops using demonstration, guided practice, and group activities. Teachers leave the workshop ready to implement immediately, not after weeks of theoretical unpacking.

Six languages, so far

We currently produce materials in six languages, because a child reads for meaning fastest in the language they think in.

One method, every language

The Read Today phonics strategy does more than teach a set word list. Because it is built on a specialised phonic methodology, a learner who masters it can decode and read in any language, not only the six we focus on today. That is why the remaining South African languages will follow. The method already reaches them.

Since 2019, Read Today SA (our delivery partner) has worked directly with schools in Limpopo, expanding into Gauteng in 2026 through a formal partnership with the Tshwane South District. We are now scaling into North West through corporate CSI partnerships. Every number above is verified through District Office records and Circuit Manager reports.

Our founder

Meet Mrs Namadzavho Annah Ramabulana.

Every Child Reads Initiative NPC and its delivery partner Read Today SA were founded by Mrs Namadzavho Annah Ramabulana. Her story does not begin with an organisation. It begins in 1981, in a Foundation Phase classroom at Tshavhadinda Primary School, where she formed the conviction that has defined four decades of work: literacy is not one subject among many. It is the foundation every other subject depends on.

What sets her apart is not how long she taught, but what she kept building. The Department of Education asked her to establish a new school, and she became the founding principal of Mboneni Primary. She started an after-school English programme, so a child's access to help would not depend on what their family could afford. Believing literacy begins long before Grade 1, she founded Tshakumba Preschool.

The pattern repeats across her career: she is asked to help, and she builds something that outlives the asking. Every Child Reads Initiative NPC is the largest institution she has founded. What she once built for one school, one community, one district, she is now building for the country.

“If children cannot read, they cannot learn. And if they cannot learn, the country cannot progress.” Mrs Namadzavho Annah Ramabulana, Founder

Our work has been formally endorsed by the Department of Basic Education at national, provincial, and district level. The following recommendations are available in full on request.

Permission is herewith granted to Read Today SA to work collaboratively with the District Office, CLI in supporting schools with Literacy programmes.
Mr A.M. Nkadimeng District Director, Tshwane South District, Gauteng Department of Education (12 March 2026)
The reports we receive from schools is that the reading champions are very helpful in that the number of learners who are unable to read has dropped significantly to an extent that by the end of term 3 schools will be reporting that almost all their learners will be able to read.
Dr TM Chauke Circuit Manager, Shamavunga Circuit, Mopani East District, Limpopo (29 August 2025)
I would enter into Grade 1, 2 and 3 classrooms and I would choose any learner to read for me. What I saw was amazing, learners were able to read what was asked to read.
Dr Masetla M.A. Shiluvane Circuit, Limpopo (2 September 2025)
Following her involvement, we observed a notable decline in the number of high-risk learners, those previously identified as struggling to read for meaning.
Ms Tshifhiwa Selina Ramurunzi former Circuit Manager, Dzindi Circuit, Limpopo (30 August 2025)
